Excretion

What does "excretion" mean to you?

This was the question I posed to my classes this year.

Check out their answers below.

Excretion is defined as the removal of metabolic waste products from the human body, via excretory organs.

Metabolic waste products are end products of chemical reactions, which do not have any use in a living organism, and may be toxic.

· urea needs to be removed from the body as it is toxic

· urea is the end product of deamination of excess amino acids in the liver

The kidneys are specialized organs that:

· remove the toxic waste product urea from the circulating blood – they carry out excretion

· regulate the water content of the blood – they carry out osmoregulation
